Many readers of this newspaper will recall some of the initiatives that were suggested as a legacy to the G8 Summit being hosted in the Lough Erne Resort, Enniskillen.

There was the Waterpark that was due to be located in Enniskillen, the £30m bridge across Lough Erne that could have have helped form part of the Enniskillen Southern Bypass.

The only lasting physical legacy now appear to be only the faded images of 'busy café's and shops' located across Fermanagh.

Even the requests to have the specially commissioned £7,000 G8 table used by the world leaders returned to Fermanagh has fallen on deaf ears, a point which has been raised on multiple occasions by Sinn Féin Councillor, Sheamus Greene

Speaking at a Council meeting in 2022, Councillor Greene said: "Prime Minister Cameron came over and I remember sitting in the Town Hall while members of the Foreign Office promised £650 million of benefit to the region.

"Not only did we not get a penny of what was promised, but he nicked the table and the chairs! We have asked for it to be repatriated. I would love to see it back in Enniskillen.”

In a letter to then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, Councillor Greene asked the PM "to fulfil the broken promises of your predecessors and fund the projects initially promised.”

When asked by this newspaper about the legacy of the G8 summit, a spokesperson for Fermanagh and Omagh District Council said: "Neither Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, nor the legacy Fermanagh District Council undertook a formal assessment of the legacy of the G8 summit.

"The legacy Council was unsuccessful in its repeated efforts to secure funding associated to mark the legacy of the G8 from Government and there have been no indications in recent years that the Government will revisit this position.

"The Council's informal assessment is that there were promotional and marketing benefits associated with the G8 and visitors to the district on occasion reference the hosting of the G8.

"The Council has no current plans to mark the 10-year anniversary of the summit."
