A group of Fermanagh lads are taking on a spicy challenge as they dare to eat the hottest sauces and chillies in the world, with the aim of raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Adam Doherty, Dan Reihill, Billy White, Jack McGowan, Adrian McCaughey and Ryan McClintock will be going through a hot sauce gauntlet, where they will be eating five different sauces, which will increase in heat as they go along, during a special event hosted at Pat’s Bar, Enniskillen on Friday, July 7.

“We our putting ourselves through pain to help children with cancer at Great Ormond Street, whether it be funding towards cancer research or giving terminally ill children time with their families,” said Adam, who has previously fundraised for the charity by dressing up as Spider-Man at the opening night of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at the IMC Cinema, Enniskillen.

He added: “We will be eating the hottest sauces and chillies in the world for the amusement of our town as well as the online community.

“We will not sell tickets, but ask that you come along and support the cause, whether it be online with the live-stream to donate, or with buckets provided at the event in person!”

Outlining the five different hot sauces that he and the others will be bravely consuming on the night, Adam explained that they will start off with ‘Frank’s Hot Sauce’.

“It’s a familiar one and an easy first start,” he said, continuing: “Number two is a Trinidad scorpion [pepper] based hot sauce at 104,000 Scoville units [the measurement used to grade peppers] – a jalapeño checks in at around 5,000 Scoville units.”

Noting that they are taking inspiration from the YouTube series ‘Hot Ones’ for their sauce choices, Adam noted that the third one is called the ‘Garlic Reaper’ sauce.

“It was sauce number 7/10 in Season 7 of the show, at 116,000 Scoville units,” he said, going on to explain that the fourth hot sauce is called ‘Da Bomb Beyond Insanity’, adding: “It’s 135,600 Scoville units, and is the most famous sauce on Hot Ones for the pain is causes.

“It seems to hurt more than sauces with much higher Scoville units, and not many know why that is.”

The final sauce is called ‘Gator’; however, Adam noted that it’s not technically a sauce, but a pepper mash.

“[It’s] 96 per cent pure chilli pepper and four per cent vinegar. It’s made from a pepper called ‘Pepper X’ and comes in at around 2.5 million Scoville units – it’s made by the guy that invented the Carolina Reaper, the world’s hottest chilli; however, soon this pepper will be named the world’s hottest.”

The festivities will start at 8pm on the night and there will also be a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses.

“Prizes include two tickets to the Enniskillen Taste Experience, various bottles of spirits and prosecco, personal training vouchers, tattoo vouchers, local food vouchers and hampers,” said Adam, explaining that all the money raised from the raffle will be donated to Great Ormond Street.

Nervously looking forward to the fundraising event, Adam told this newspaper: “We’re hoping its success can make it an annual event, changing the sauce line-up each year.”
