The 2022/23 year has been busy for Caritas Choir, who recently finished their season on a high note, performing at the Guildhall in Derry-Londonderry as part of the Every Voice Festival.

Caritas received an invitation from Allegri Choir to participate in a ‘Come Sing’ workshop in the Guildhall during the day, followed that evening with a performance of some of their well-rehearsed repertoire of pieces, as well as a collective sing with all the other choirs in attendance.

“This type of venture is all new to our choir members and was an exciting challenge embraced by all,” said a Caritas spokesperson, adding: “Choir members enjoyed the experience, the learning and the networking opportunity with other singers, choirs and musical tutors from across the world.”

Throughout the year, the choir enjoyed weekly rehearsals, meeting on a Friday evening, and a variety of different public performances, from singing at the Ardhowen Theatre for the Summer Solstice, to performing outdoors at the Round O last August.

“Then for Christmas [2022], we again focused on raising much needed funds for local charities by leading a carol service at The Graan Monastery, and St. Michael’s Church, Enniskillen, where we were accompanied by Prof. Desmond Hunter on organ,” added the spokesperson, continuing that in the spring, the choir hired the Ardhowen Theatre to perform a variety concert which included collaborations with soloists and other local musicians.

In May, Caritas were asked to sing at Enniskillen Castle for the Coronation visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, which the spokesperson described as “a great honour”.

Explaining that Caritas is a “very organic, eclectic group of singers with varying backgrounds” who all have a “love for singing and music”, the spokesperson added: “The passion and enthusiasm cascades from the top through the Musical Director, Helen Hamill, who sets the tone for the group.

“Her commitment is infectious, for which we are very grateful.”
