Even by the eclectic standards of every year’s Lady of the Lake Festival, this year’s Fair Day – and the day itself – held on Tuesday had a dizzying range of things to see, do and enjoy.

People of all ages came together in Irvinestown for a great day, with pleasant weather adding to an upbeat atmosphere for the day’s community-focused fun.

Almost from dawn to dusk, and beyond, people of all ages from across the area had much to enjoy, with Tuesday building on the terrific success of the festival’s events on previous days, which included the unveiling of the gracious new Lady of the Lake, and a highly-entertaining donkey derby.

A key part of the fair day on Tuesday was once again exploring and celebrating crafts and trades of olden days, with a number of demonstrations from highly-skilled people showcasing some of the best traditional skills from bygone days.

Whether curious locals wanted to see and learn about sheep shearing, see horse-drawn transport, be wowed by Erne Highland Dancers, have a go at an All Ireland Potato Peeling Competition, dress to impress for a vintage wear competition, or even to have a go at poitin making, the day’s schedule of events promised much to see and enjoy.

Once again, the Lady of the Lake organisers had laid on a day to wow and impress, showing not just that the area respects and celebrates the skills and achievements of hardworking folk who had given so much to the community in the past, but that the festival and community is looking to the future, too, with a very healthy engagement in a wide range of cultural activities and events.

For those looking to move on from the fair day’s impressive range of sights and events, the evening’s 10K/5K that set off from the Bawnacre Centre was a great way for many people to race around, shortly before Mahon’s Hotel held a charity dance that night in aid of Chest Heart & Stroke, with other local businesses also adding to the festival’s lively, welcoming day for everyone.

Whether enjoying a slower pace of life celebrated by much of the fair day, running around for the healthy evening race, or stepping up for a lively night at the popular hotel to support a great cause, Tuesday set a great benchmark of quality and entertainment for the Lady of the Lake Festival to meet again next year.
