“THE GLADIATORS”, an action packed television show will attract a lot of local interest in the autumn, when a “Superstar” from the county takes part in the contest.

Alan Bates, from Enniskillen, well known for his achievements in the Irish and World “Superstars” events, was selected from a huge entry in the United Kingdom, to participate in the competitions, which require skill and strength.

And he admitted that “The Gladiators” was one of the most arduous ventures, he has ever become involved in - even in relation to the “Superstars”.

Alan, went through the interview stage, leading to his appearance in the series, achieving success in gruelling fitness assessment tests, incorporating running on a treadmill for a particular distance within a certain time, strict pull-ups on a pull-up bar, and rope climbing - straight after each other.

Alan described the atmosphere in the arena as “fabulous” and said that he really enjoyed taking part. He had to train on the equipment a week before actual filming.

And he disclosed that the activities on the show, presented by former weather girl Ulrika Johnson and John Fashanu, look “easier” on television than in reality.

“It was one of the hardest things I have ever done,” said Alan, who commented that the “Gladiators” averaged over 20 stone - in comparison to his 12st frame.
