Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has confirmed it “mistakenly” planted plug plants in the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) owned roundabout near Enniskillen Library before removing them.

The plants, which were planted on the roundabout, were subsequently removed within 24 hours.

A Council spokesperson said: “Council staff mistakenly undertook some planting on this Department for Infrastructure owned roundabout on Thursday, June 15 while undertaking other grounds maintenance work on Council property in that area.

“The mistake was identified by staff when they returned to the depot on Thursday evening. The ‘plug’ plants were removed from the roundabout the following day, with plants reused elsewhere where possible, with any remaining unfit for reuse recycled into compost.

“DfI is responsible for all aspects of the roundabout including its maintenance.”

The spokesperson explained that plug plants are “small seedlings grown in trays of individual cells”.

“The Council purchases most of its bedding plants and flowers as plug plants which are then grown to a more mature plant for the displays around the District. This is a more cost-efficient way for the Council to provide plants and flowers rather than purchasing more expensive mature plants.”
