A Christian fundamentalist who believes homosexuality, adultery, divorce, abortion, and Rock Music should be against the law has refused to comment on why she wants a gay pride event banned from taking place in Enniskillen.

Susan-Anne White – a self-styled moral crusader who failed to get elected to Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in 2015 after securing just 166 votes – was protesting against Fermanagh Pride earlier this week.

She stood at the Diamond holding a sign protesting against the event that is planned for Fermanagh next year, and urged people to sign a petition against it.

On the other side of the street, a small group of young people sat with a makeshift ‘Love thy gay neighbour’ sign in opposition.

Police officers were also in attendance and spoke to both groups about keeping proceedings civil.

Phoebe and Leo were part of the group of young people who were sitting on the bench in the Diamond.

When asked about the people on the opposite side of the street, Phoebe accepted that everyone has a right to their opinion, but they are also allowed to be challenged on their opinion as well.

“They’re holding this controversial sign up. Anytime someone comes up to them and disagrees with them, it’s silence,” said Phoebe.

“They don’t speak, or they just don’t even argue back. They just walk away. They won’t accept that people disagree [with them].”

Referring to the sign and the opposition to Pride in Fermanagh in 2024, Phoebe said having an event like that in a place like Fermanagh is vital.

“You see in Belfast you get the big, huge Pride. And everyone feels so safe.

“It’s important because, in the rural areas, people don’t feel comfortable with themselves.”

When asked what they would say to the people protesting against Pride in Fermanagh, the group had a simple message: “Love thy neighbour”.

Phoebe added: “You’re absolutely allowed your opinion. But when you don’t accept that people disagree, that’s a problem.

“It’s just being respectful. I guess this is a generational thing that they grew up with that, but it’s changed. It’s 2023. Being gay is hardly the worst thing in the world right now.”

The group said they had some support from passers-by with Leo claiming those protesting against Pride were “looking for a reaction” and there was “no point being nasty”.

However, when Mrs. White, who is known for expressing her view, was approached to discuss why she was against Pride in Fermanagh, she declined to comment.
