The hardy swimmers of Newtownbutler and surrounding areas once again braved the bracing waters of Lough Erne for a fundraising New Year’s Day swim.

Scores of swimmers of all ages and abilities headed to Galloon Jetty on January 1, taking the plunge into the freezing waters around Galloon Island for an invigorating – if freezing – start to 2024.

As with last year’s plunge, this year the brave swimmers were helping to fundraise for Palliative Transport Service Fermanagh, and the vital work they do transporting cancer patients to hospital, removing worry and stress, and making sure they are comfortably, safely and able to meet their medical appointments in time.

The day’s gloomy weather was set aside by plenty of laughter – and the swish of some towels to help dry off and begin to warm up – as the super swimmers once again showed some great community spirit in helping to support a worthy cause.
