PUPILS of Mount Lourdes Grammar School in Enniskillen were delighted to welcome the US Consul General for Northern Ireland, Mr James Applegate.

Mr Applegate visited the school in advance of 59 history students and seven teachers travelling to Washington on Saturday.

Upon arrival, Mr Applegate was met by Monsignor Peter O'Reilly, chairperson of the Board of Governors, and principal, Mrs Sinead Cullen.

Also in attendance were representatives from two local businesses with American links, Mr Dara O'Reilly, newly-appointed CEO of Mannok, and Mr Gareth Byrne, general manager at the Lough Erne Resort.

After a welcome from the school traditional music group, Mr Applegate visited an A level French class before having a question and answer session with the students travelling to Washington.

This was followed by a business meeting with Mr O'Reilly, Mr Byrne and A-level Economics students.

There was also an opportunity to hear about the 'SistersIN Leadership' programme, which a number of year 13 students are involved in.

Following the school visit Mr Applegate travelled to the Lough Erne Resort for a tour of the hotel and golf course.
