A LOCAL MLA has voiced her "shock" after it was announced that Westminster funding has been withdrawn from the Brookeborough Shared Education Campus.

The planned campus to house Brookeborough Primary School and the nearby St. Mary's Primary School is one of 10 building projects for shared and integrated schools that has seen funding withdrawn.

On Tuesday, Education Minister, Paul Given, told Stormont that the £150m was reallocated in the Treasury's £3.3bn financial package for the restoration of the powersharing Executive.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone DUP MLA Deborah Erskine voiced her disappointment at the funding announcement, stressing that it must not "spell the end" of the project.

“I have been championing and raising the case of the Brookeborough Shared Campus for a number of months," said Mrs. Erskine.

"When the Executive was restored, I asked questions to the Education Minister regarding the project. This setback is beyond his control. It is a result of a UK Government decision regarding funding."

The local MLA continued: "It is really disappointing, and it has come as a shock. This project was being funded by money from the 2015 Fresh Start Agreement, but it has been pulled.

"We must remember - and I stress - that it does not spell the end of this project.

"It will continue under the normal Capital Funding stream, as outlined by the Education Minister in the Assembly this week.

"I will be making sure Fermanagh and South Tyrone has its fair share of investment and will fight for the need within our schools."

Mrs. Erskine added: "I know that our DUP Education Minister will be lobbying for extra money in his Department to progress Capital projects, and I am liaising directly with him on this.”
