AN 'R' driver who was caught speeding at around 90mph has been spared her licence.

Kaya Lucia (20), of Loop Road, Newtownbutler, came before District Judge Alana McSorley at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, April 9.

Lucia had previously pleaded guilty to a single charge of exceeding 45mph as an 'R' driver in February of this year.

A prosecutor told the court how on February 11 at around 1.20pm, police on mobile patrol in Enniskillen met a car displaying 'R' plates at a set of traffic lights.

Police continued on the Dublin Road at a speed of 60mph, and then observed the vehicle "catching up with them".

Conditions were foggy and visibility was impaired, the prosecutor said. Police then pulled into a turnoff at Lisbellaw,  and followed the driver "at speeds of 90mph".

Police pulled the driver over, who identified herself as Lucia, and cautioned her for speeding as an 'R' driver.

Lucia's solicitor described her as an "industrious individual" who was studying full-time at South West College, with aspirations to go to university, while also working part-time at McDonald's.

"On the day in question, she had finished her shift at 1pm, and was heading home," the solicitor said.

"She was rushing home from her shift, but this is no excuse for such excess speed."

District Judge Alana McSorley was presented with a reference from Lucia's employer.

The solicitor added: "She has learned her lesson, and it is highly unlikely that she will be before the court again."

Judge McSorley said she was willing to allow Lucia to keep her licence, but was imposing four penalty points, fines of £150, and a £15 offender levy.
