An Ulster University graduate has invited United States Special Envoy to Northern Ireland, Joe Kennedy III, to visit Fivemiletown.

Mairaid Kelly seized the opportunity when she travelled to Boston as part of an Ulster University Leadership programme, which brought together future business leaders and entrepreneurs with a number of luminaries in a programme organised by the university to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.

Ms. Kelly said: "Having the chance to meet the President’s Special Envoy ,Joe Kennedy III in his home town was an honour and a privilege, and I wanted to return the famous Irish welcome and extend an invitation to mine".

The two spoke about the Groundwork Project established by Mr. Kennedy, aimed at supporting under-resourced communities.

She also shared her campaign story to save a small school in Fivemiletown from closure.

She added: "He took my details, so I’m hoping that is a good sign.”

Mr. Kennedy addressed the newly launched Boston Chapter of Ulster University Connects, emphasising America's support for Northern Ireland.

He told the 25@25 programme leaders to “keep the faith, apply that leadership that you so genuinely emanate and continue the positive influence in your neighbourhoods, your communities and wider society”, noting its importance.

Professor Cathy Gormley-Heenan, the university's Provost, said: “This event was a brilliant opportunity for our 25 future leaders to make international connections and network with our community and industry leaders, gaining fresh perspectives and valuable insights which we hope will bring new opportunities and spark exciting ideas.”

Ms. Kelly also chaired a panel discussion involving figures such as David Foss, Managing Director at PwC Boston, and Declan Byrne, a Dublin native who is the Asset and Wealth Management Global Asurance Leader at PwC.

She said: “David and Declan were so generous not only with their time and hospitality, but with their insights and experiences."

The group had also travelled to Babson College in Boston where they completed a residential course in developing entrepreneurial thought and action.

She described the experience as the "most intense and immense week of development I've ever experienced".
