Four men have been charged with offences linked to an offensive display placed on a bonfire in Moygashel earlier this summer, following an ongoing police investigation into the incident.
The charges come after a series of arrests in the Moygashel area on Tuesday, August 25, as part of inquiries into a display erected on a bonfire in July which prompted widespread criticism and sparked a police investigation.
Three men, aged 28, 38 and 58, have each been charged with displaying written material intended to stir up hatred or arouse fear. A fourth man, aged 74, has been charged with intimidation.
All four are due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, September 16. As with all criminal proceedings, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).
A fifth man, aged 51, who was also arrested as part of the investigation, has since been released. Police confirmed that a report will be submitted to the PPS in due course.
The latest development follows earlier police action in connection with the incident. As previously reported by the Impartial Reporter, three men were arrested after an offensive display was erected on a bonfire in the Moygashel area ahead of July's Eleventh Night celebrations.
The display attracted significant public attention and condemnation, with police launching an investigation to determine whether any criminal offences had been committed.
At the time, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said officers were investigating a number of potential offences, including those relating to hate crime legislation.
The arrests and subsequent charges form part of ongoing efforts by detectives to establish the circumstances surrounding the erection of the display and those responsible for it.
Police have not released further details regarding the nature of the display but have confirmed that their investigation remains active.
The case is scheduled to come before Dungannon Magistrates' Court next month.
