There is no denying that conditions can be challenging during the winter, however it is a great time to work on your game in readiness for the season ahead.

The following will help you get through these long cold winter months and get the very most of your game. Play a softer ball and keep it warm. When it is cold the core of the ball gets harder meaning that more clubhead speed is required to hit it the usual distance. Using a softer ball than usual can help not only maintain distances but also the feel you are accustomed to. Keeping hand warmers in your pocket and alternating between balls from one hole to the next will enhance the effect further as well as helping to keep your hands warm. Keep yourself warm by layering up: It might seem obvious, however being cold can, and will, have a serious effect on how well you can swing. Cold muscles will not perform anywhere near as well as warm ones and are more susceptible to injury. However, be aware that wearing bulky clothes may keep you warm but will severely impede and restrict the swing movement. Combining several thin layers with high tech lightweight base layer clothing for the legs and body will keep you warm and comfortable without inhibiting the swing and would therefore be seen as essential kit for winter golf. Take lessons and work on your game: A PGA Professional will identify aspects of your game that require improvement and give S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time Orientated) targets to work towards. Improve your flexibility: The chances are you are nowhere near as flexible as you think or really need to be to play to your maximum potential. Having a physical screen to assess areas that could be improved can show huge benefits regardless of your age or current standard.
