This Thursday, World Number One and reigning Race to Dubai champion Rory McIlroy will make his first competitive appearance of 2015 in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, which this week celebrates its tenth anniversary.

One of nine Major Champions in a star-studded field, McIlroy will be keen to maintain his impressive record in the US$2.7 million tournament, the first of three events which comprise the ‘Desert Swing’.

Once again the European Tour extends way beyond the boundaries of Europe and into the prosperous area that has been the backbone of the European Tour for the last number of years. In fact take away such sponsors and the demise of the European Tour would accelerate beyond repair.

McIlroy has finished runner-up three times in Abu Dhabi – in 2011, 2012 and behind winner Pablo Larrazábal of Spain last year – so the 25 year old Ulsterman will be confident of shedding his bridesmaid’s tag and adding to his nine European Tour titles this week.

Perhaps the only player in the field who feels more at home in Abu Dhabi Golf Club is US Open Champion Martin Kaymer, the man who pipped him to the title in 2011.

Other notables who are also competing this week are Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and America’s Ricky Fowler, who could well be dark horse in the event. However it’s hard to get away from the fact that Mc Ilroy is long overdue a bit of luck in this tournament and he is taken to lead them all home this week at odds of 4/1 PGA Tour : Sony Open in Hawaii Another impressive field has been assembled for this week’s Sony Open, but like the Abu Dhabi it’s difficult to see beyond favourite Jason Day from Australia. Day finished strongly last week and no doubt this talented Aussie should have all the skills to master this windy venue. At 12/1 he represents decent value.
