Lisnaskea 4-16 Irvinestown 4-13

Lisnaskea and Irvinestown played out a high scoring thriller in Emmett Park on Sunday and in the end it was the home side who prevailed with three points to spare as they secured a 4-16 to 4-13 victory.
The result pulls Lisnaskea to within a point of Irvinestown who have now dropped into the bottom four in the table after the weekend’s results and it is all to play for at the foot of Division One as the campaign draws to an end.
The Emmetts gained the upperhand in the contest in the first half when they plundered three goals to go in at the break with a 3-06 to 1-08 advantage.
And when they grabbed a fourth three-pointer early in the second half it appeared as if they had the points in the bag.
However, Irvinestown rallied and they netted three goals of their own to get right back into contention but Daniel Kille hit a string of points for the home side as the contest drew to a conclusion and they went on to secure a three point win.
“We were just glad to come through it and get the points,” said Emmetts manager Kevin O’Rourke. “Irvinestown came back at us but Cecil (Kille) managed to settle us down again and we are pleased to have got the win. It was an important result for us. I thought we were good going forward and now we will need to look at tightening up defensively.”
O’Rourke admits though that with a difficult run in, his side face a big task in lifting themselves out of the bottom four and safe of the relegation play-off.
“We finish with games against Derrygonnelly, Roslea and Kinawley, so it is tough. Our aim is to try and find a bit of form and get a bit of confidence coming up to the end of the league and heading into the championship,” he stated.
Irvinestown also have work to do if they are to avoid the play-offs and they will be looking to get points on the board with games coming up against Kinawley and St. Pat’s over the next week.
Lisnaskea got off to the perfect start to the game when Mark Little slotted to the net for the first score of the game.
Indeed, matters improved further for the home outfit when Tom Clarke drove forward from the middle of the park before firing to the net although Irvinestown did hit back with a goal of their own from the impressive Ronan Ormsby.
The sides traded points throughout the first half with Ormsby, Kevin McDonnell and Shane Goan among the points for Irvinestown while Kille, Chris McCabe, Mark Smyth and Mark Little landed points for Lisnaskea.
With the interval approaching though Lisnaskea swooped for a third goal through Ryan Glancy and when Kille then knocked over two further points it put them into a 3-06 to 1-08 half time lead.
Glancy then grabbed a second goal for Lisnaskea early in the second half but Irvinestown responded with three goals of their own from Ormsby, Goan and Benny McCaffrey had them right back in the mix.
At this stage Irvinestown were pushing forward in search of a result but it was the experience of Kille that was to see the Emmetts over the line.
The sharpshooter registered his side’s last seven points of the game, three coming from frees and four from play to keep his side in front and although Irvinestown had points from the likes of Ormsby, Gary Maguire and Stephen Sheridan it was not to be enough to deny Lisnaskea who claimed a three point victory at the finish, 4-16 to 4-13.
Both sides are in action again on Friday night with Lisnaskea having home advantage against unbeaten Derrygonnelly and Irvinestown also at home to a Kinawley side sitting second in the table.
