Enniskillen 0-08 Devenish 0-11

Devenish secured their first win of the season with a three point victory over Enniskillen at Brewster Park on Friday night.

The Garrison men led by two at the interval and then landed the opening three points of the second half to open up a cushion that they never really looked like losing against an understrength Gaels outfit.

Enniskillen coach Simon Bradley felt his side missed chances at a key time in the game but accepted that Devenish were worthy winners in the end.

“I think both teams missed a lot over the course of the game and certainly at 0-07 to 0-04 down we had a couple of chances and we didn’t take the right option and that maybe shows the inexperience that we had out,” he said.

However, with a lot of players missing due to inter-county commitments, Bradley does feel that the competition has been useful in allowing them to assess players who are hoping to make their mark at senior level.

“We have learnt plenty from the three games we have played so far and in that sense it has been a useful competition for us. We have had a good look at a few boys who had put up their hands in training and they won’t be judged on results but on performances,” he commented.

Devenish joint manager Sylvester Mulrone was satisfied to come away rom Brewster Park with the points.

“We were happy enough with the result, it is only our second outing of the season so we still have plenty to work on.

“We didn’t convert as many of our chances as we would have wished, but as I say, it is still early doors and I thought it was a very competitive game on the night,” he said.

Next up for Devenish is a meeting with Roslea on Friday nigh in Garrison and Mulrone expects another tough test against the Shamrocks.

“Roslea, as always, will be a tough test and I think we will be missing a few lads for the game but that then is an opportunity for somebody else to come in. That is the great thing about this competition, it gives teams a chance to have a look at lads that maybe they wouldn’t if it was the league.

“It is an opportunity for those lads to come in and show what they can do,” said Mulrone.

The opening quarter of the game saw the sides share six points. Terry O’Flanagan rattled over two frees and Barry Mulrone also converted a free for the away side with Michael Dooris, Conall Quinn and Timmy Boyd replying for Enniskillen.

While both sides were guilty of being wasteful in attack, Devenish were enjoying the greater share of possession and two further points from O’Flanagan put them into a 0-05 to 0-03 half time advantage.

And they went on to boss the early exchanges in the second half as Jamie Flanagan slotted over two points and influential midfielder Jason Love also on target to make it 0-08 to 0-03.

Conor Watson and Mulrone then traded points before Ethan Beresford and Boyd fired over to bring the home team back to within three points.

That was as close as they were to get though with Devenish looking threatening on the break. JJ O’Brien clipped over after Flanagan had hit the post and Christopher Magowan also chipped in with a point for the visitors.

Enniskillen did keep plugging away and Watson and Ross Bogue knocked over points but in the end Devenish were deserving victors.
