Magheraveely 4 Lisbellaw Utd 3 (aet)

Magheraveely overcame Lisbellaw in extra time to win a thrilling all-Fermanagh second round Junior Cup tie.

The game looked set for penalties as the teams struggled to find a decisive winner in 120 minutes, but in the final minute Paddy Smith’s free kick from 20 yards found the bottom corner to knock Lisbellaw out of the competition.

Lisbellaw were five minutes away from winning the match in normal time before Magheraveely scored to take the game into extra time, and Manager Kyle McCleery was frustrated his team could not hold on for victory.

“Ultimately, I am very disappointed with the result and our performance,” said the Lisbellaw boss. “It was a really poor game of football, with very little quality on display.

“The two first-half goals we conceded were shocking – really poor defending. It’s a game I want to forget about as quickly as possible and move on.”

Magheraveely made the perfect start when they raced into the lead inside the first minute of the match, Andy Little converting a David Elliott through ball to put the home side ahead.

Sean O’Connor then fired into the side netting for Magheraveely, before Lisbellaw drew level with an equaliser after seven minutes when Matty Woods headed in a Davy Little corner.

The goals continued to flow, and midway through the half Magheraveely regained the lead when Andy Little and Ronan Stirrat combined to set up O’Connor who slotted past the keeper.

Lisbellaw came out after the half-time interval reinvigorated, and turned the game on its head with two goals in a five-minute burst.

Scott Moutray converted from a cross and then Robbie Little put his team ahead to shock the home crowd.

Magheraveely introduced Paul Elliott from the bench in an attempt to haul their way back into the match, and it arrived in the 85th minute when O’Connor’s pass released Warren Stewart and he made no mistake.

Lisbellaw almost grabbed a dramatic injury time winner, but Connor Smith’s double save ensured the game went into extra time.

Little and Elliott both went close in added time, but the game was not decided until the final minute.

Elliott was brought down on the edge of the penalty area after a mazy run, and Smith curled the free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner to take Magheraveely through to round three.
