It was a tough day for Derrygonnelly Harps in their first appearance in an Ulster Club Championshi Final.

They Fermanagh champions were well beaten by a hugely impressive Kilcoo side in Armagh last Sunday.

For joint manager, Mick Glynn, as well as the result, the team performance was also tough to take.

“Well obviously we are all very disappointed, disappointed with the result and disappointed with the way we performed,” said Glynn.

“We thought we had worked hard and had our match ups and systems in place but it didn’t work.

“But I think Kilcoo they are that bit further down the road than us, they are a very good team and from early on they dictated what way the game was going to be played.”

While Kilcoo controlled matters, Derrygonnelly were still only a point behind with less than five minutes to go in the first half.

However, things took a turn for the worst for the Harps just before half time: “We were looking at the watch and there was 27 minutes gone and the score was 0-03 to 0-02.

“We had a bad kick out, we gave away possession and they got a free and it was 0-04 0-02.

“Then they got the goal and all of a sudden there was six points in it at half time and once they get ahead of you they just know how to keep the ball and we struggled for possession then.”

The second half followed much like the first with Kilcoo dominating, keeping the Harps scoreless for most of the second period.

Glynn praised the Ulster champions and while there was much to be proud for the Harps over the season, he knows it has ended in disappointment.

“They are an exceptional team and I think they will give the All-Ireland a good rattle and it is the level that we have to get to if we want to get success.

Glynn continued: “It’s a first for the club to reach an Ulster Final but we would liked to have performed better obviously but a great season.

“I think the objective for any club when they start out the year is to win their own championship and you do that and anything after that is a bonus.

“We won two rounds of the Ulster championship to get to the final. It was a good season but ultimately it has ended in disappointment.”
