This weekend, Erne Wrestling Club will partake in two different wrestling events in the UK and Ireland.

The first is the Dublin Open, and the second, the British Wrestling’s Referee Conference.

On Sunday, April 10, the Dublin Open – a Junior and Senior Freestyle Wrestling competition – will be held at the Poppintree Community and Sports Centre.

It is the first such competition held in the Republic since its Covid-19 restrictions have relaxed.

Erne Wrestling will be sending two of its competitive wrestling team: Darragh Love (ERGS) and Ewan McDowell (Model Primary School).

Darragh had achieved Gold against Israel at the Helsinki Open and International Competition in November, and he will be aiming to do the same in Dublin.

Ewan has not competed since the Scottish Open in 2019, where he took Bronze.

The 11-year-old is looking forward to returning to the mat to put his skills to the test whilst gaining some competitive experience.

Erne Wrestling will also be at the British Wrestling Referee Conference in Manchester at the weekend.

Sisters Charlotte and Cara McGuigan will be representing Fermanagh and Northern Ireland at the two-day event.

Carlos Garcia from United World Wrestling will be discussing the UWW Referee Educator Rules Update on Saturday morning, with a practical session on the mat and a talk on Referees Mechanics in the afternoon.

On Sunday, the sisters will be taking part in a session on Greco-Roman refereeing after a detailed Question and Answer session.

The wrestling club is positive about the weekend ahead as it hopes to build upon past successes and nurture its members in their chosen wrestling pathways.

This weekend will develop the referees and competition team as they work towards the British Junior Freestyle Wrestling Competition next month.
