Enniskillen 1-09 Kinawley 0-06

Enniskillen made it two wins out of two in the Club Players’ Competition with a six-point win over Kinawley in Brewster Park on Friday night.

Kinawley had enjoyed the better of things, possession wise, in the first half but an early Ethan Beresford goal helped Enniskillen into a two-point half-time advantage and they went on to control matters after the break to run out victors.

Gaels Manager Simon Bradley was pleased with the win and also the opportunity to have a look at a number of players in different positions.

“It was another good work out and a good win. It is difficult putting things together when you have five players involved with the county, so we are playing players out of position, but it is good to get a look at them in those roles,” he said.

The defeat was Kinawley’s second in the competition and Manager Dom Corrigan had no complaints about the outcome.

“We were second best on the night,” he said. “The Gaels got an early goal and we never really threatened them, despite having a lot of the possession.

“It was a good game though for us in terms of lessons to be learnt and showing us improvements that needs to be made.”

It was Kinawley who landed the opening score of the game through Shea Keenan, but Enniskillen responded with the only goal of the contest in the fourth minute.

Conor Love picked out Beresford with a superb pass over the top and then Beresford clinically dispatched his shot past Owen Melanaphy in the Brian Borus net.

Lively

Kinawley though had the chance to hit back with a goal of their own when the lively Ruairi Corrigan, who had a good tussle with James Ferguson, raced in – but he was denied by Fergal Quinn in the home goal.

Corrigan did land a mark soon after before James O’Donnell answered for Enniskillen, but a fisted point from Eoghan McManus and a converted Sean McManus free left it all level, 1-01 to 0-04, with 19 minutes on the clock.

However, it was Enniskillen who finished the half the stronger with Love slotting over a free before the impressive Conor McShea knocked over to make it 1-03 to 0-04 at the interval.

As in the first half, Kinawley registered the first score of the second period through Sean McManus to reduce the arrears to the minimum, but McShea replied for the home side before O’Donnell and Paddy Cassidy combined to set up Beresford, who fired over to make it a three-point game by the end of the third quarter.

O’Donnell and Sean McManus then traded points from frees, but it was Enniskillen who were to gain the upper hand as the game drew to a close.

McShea and Love both rattled over good scores to put five in it, although the visitors did have a late goal chance when Orin McGovern got in, but his effort was gathered on the line by Love as the Gaels cleared.

And McShea then slotted over his fourth point of the game to round off the scoring as Enniskillen claimed a 1-09 to 0-06 win.
