The Fermanagh Brazilian Ju Jitsu Club took a team of four adults and two kids to Grappling Industries, Belfast recently and returned home with seven medals, including four gold, two silver and a bronze.

This was their first outing to a big tournament, with the club placing 10th out of 36 in the adult rankings, and sixth out of 11 in the kids/teens.

Ryan Leonard competed in four divisions and placed in three out of four, winning gold in Gi Absolute, silver in Gi and gold in Nogi, with some excellent dominating displays.

Matt Rennick came away with bronze in Gi after two impressive wins and two very narrow points losses against some strong opponents.

After that, he subbed his way through the Nogi to win gold.

In the teens group, Daniel Gawley moved up two weight classes to get an opponent and made some good points against a very strong opponent, but came away with silver in his first BJJ tournament.

Conor Gawley won gold after a clear points victory in his first match, followed by a win by Americana in his second.

The club also had great performances by Jason Gallagher and Kyle Maguire, who unfortunately didn’t make it to the podium this time, but it won’t be long.

Jason moved up two weight classes to join a large division and had a very good points victory in one of his matches in his first ever tournament.

Kyle entered with a damaged hamstring, and still fought excellently, winning one of his matches by a very smooth and fast loop choke.

Coach Lyle Gawley said: “Win or lose, I’m proud of everyone who stepped on the mats. There were massive achievements all round, and lots learned from everyone we competed against.

“Thanks to Grappling Industries for an excellent event, everyone we competed against, and all of their coaches.”
