Derrygonnelly manager Garry Smyth was delighted to see his side clinch the Intermediate title on Sunday but there is little time to dwell on that as the Harps get ready for an Ulster Club meeting with Bredagh this weekend.

On winning the title, Smyth said: “We were delighted to secure the Intermediate Championship.

“Any title you win in adult competition has to be earned and this one was no different . The squad has put in a big effort for a sustained period of time so it great for the players and all associated with Ladies’ football in the club to follow up winning the senior league with the intermediate championship.”

Goals were key for Derrygonnelly on the day and Smyth felt the game was closer than the scoreline suggested.

“It was a really competitive encounter and I think it is fair to say the final score line did not reflect the close nature of the game as Tempo were still well in it at half time .

“When you look back the couple of goals we scored in the first half gave us a bit of an edge, but we were conscious Tempo always carry a threat to hurt you on the counter attack.

“I felt our defence in particular upped the standard of their play in the second half which gave us a solid platform to build on,” he added.

The focus though has quickly switched for the Harps as they get set to take on the Down champions.

“The games just keep coming, and with the quick turnaround we have to get reset fairly quickly but the positive is the run of games is giving the squad the opportunity to continue to develop,” said Smyth, who expects a massive challenge from Bredagh.

And he believes his players will only benefit from playing quality opposition.

“When you are going to play the champions from another County it is stating the obvious to say you are going to meet a team that is going well.

“Bredagh is a real stronghold for ladies football in Ulster at the minute and they had a good win over Burren in the Down Intermediate Final so we know it is going to be an increase in standard but it’s by playing in that environment that our players get a chance to test themselves.

“The opportunity to play in these sorts of games doesn’t come around too often so it is a game the group is looking forward to, and with it being played in Derrygonnelly there should be a good atmosphere,” he stated.

Smyth says that there are some familiar names in the Bredagh ranks but he hopes that his side can give them plenty of their own to think about on the day.

“There are some familiar Down footballing names in the Bredagh line-up, but with a local connection too with Ciara Gallagher from Erne Gaels involved in their backroom team.

“We know they are a mobile outfit who will present a real test but we are hoping that we can ask some questions of our own,” he said.
