Derrygonnelly eased into the last four of the Ladies Ulster Intermediate Club Championship with a comprehensive 6-11 to 0-03 victory over Bredagh B at Canon Maguire Park on Sunday.

The Harps bossed matters throughout and had the game in the bag at half time after going in at the break with a 4-08 to 0-01 advantage.

And they added two further goals in the second half to book their spot in the semi-final.

Harps manager Garry Smyth was delighted to see his side progress in the competition.

“It’s a positive step forward for this group of players to have secured a first ever win for the club in Ulster. To secure a place in the semi-final has given everyone a boost.

“There’s a real appetite within the squad to keep improving and a willingness to learn and as long as we remain in the competition we’ll get the opportunity to do that,” said Smyth.

A lot of rain had seen other games not played on Sunday and Smyth says he was relieved to get the game played and he felt that once they settled, the Harps played some good football.

“We were relieved the pitch coped with the volume of rain which fell on Sunday so it was good to get the game played at all, particularly when the men’s County final in Brewster Park and the Aodh Ruadh and Steelstown game down the road in Ballyshannon in the Ulster Ladies Intermediate Championship were both called off due to unplayable surfaces.

“Initially underfoot conditions were difficult for both teams but I felt we adapted better on the day. Naturally there were a few nerves early on but we seemed to settle into the game after the penalty which gave us a real foothold and had some good passages of play.”

Bredagh had opened the scoring through Fiona Dolan but points from Bronagh Smyth and Eimear Smyth soon had the Harps ahead.

And Eimear Smyth then converted a penalty after Kiera Elliott was fouled and from this it was all one way traffic.

Eimear Smyth and Emma Burns tagged on points before Sarah Jane Jones and Eimear Smyth fired to the nt ion quick succession to make it 3-05 to 0-01.

And the scores continued to flow with Bronagh Smyth adding a fourth goal as the home side went in with a 4-08 to 0-01 half time lead.

The Smyth sisters and Jones tagged on further points for Derrygonnelly before Eimear Smyth and Rebecca Wallace netted late goals to ease them through to the semis.

Manager Smyth though knows that a tougher test lies ahead this Sunday when they take on Tyrone champions Moortown.

“I was pleased with how our defence played last Sunday, but looking forward to the next day out against Moortown we are facing a completely different type of challenge.

“They are coming off the back of making the Ulster Junior final last season and have just completed the double at Intermediate level in Tyrone so we can expect a formidable outfit as they are mobile and have an exuberance about them which comes with having young talent coming through,” he added.

Smyth is though happy to have another game at Canon Maguire Park.

“It is a bonus the way the draw has worked out to have the game played in Derrygonnelly as playing at home creates its own dynamic and allows everyone to stick with their own routines.

“Unfortunately it doesn’t guarantee scores on the board but certainly a vocal local support is always a help in a tight game.

It’s the type of game players train all year to be involved in and it has the makings of a fascinating occasion,” he commented.
