St Michael's 1-08 St Eunan's Letterkenny 1-02

St Michael's secured their place in the play off stages of this year's MacRory Cup with a 1-08 to 1-02 victory over St. Eunan's Leterkenny in Garvaghey on Wednesday.

St. Michael's took a grip on proceedings in the first half with a Conor O'Hanlon goal helping them into a 1-04 to 0-01 half time advantage, and they were able to keep St Eunan's at arms length throughout the second half to seal their place in the next stage of the competition.

Manager Peter Teague was delighted with his side's win on a bitterly cold day.

"We're very happy, it was one of those games that was just about winning and we're delighted to to get over the line," said Teague.

The victory saw St Michael's seal second place in their group and they will now face a play off against the school that finishes third in Section C of the competition.

"We now have the chance to get a couple of good weeks work in ahead of the play off game which is going to be a big test for us," added Teague.

St. Eunan's had suffered defeats in their opening two games in the competition and they set up defensively in the early stages with St. Michael's taking time to break them down.

However, they did start to get on top and the impressive Conor O'Hanlon bagged a goal. He traded passes following a burst from the '45 before crashing a shot into the top corner of the net to make it 1-02 to 0-00.

And by the interval St. Michael's had increased their advantage out to six points with O'Hanlon landing two first half points, one from a free and one from play, while Caolan Brennan clipped over from play and James Corry converted a mark to leave it 1-04 to 0-01 at the break.

And St. Michael's were to remain in control throughout the second half with O'Hanlon, Michael Burns and Brennan knocking over points from play while Mattie McDermott converted a free.

St. Eunan's did hit a late goal but this was only a consolation score as St. Michael's finished up 1-08 to 1-02 victors.

Best for St. Michael's on the day were O'Hanlon, James Corry, Oisin Swift and Adam Callaghan.

St. Michael's play off tie is scheduled to be played between January 4-10.
