If Enniskillen are to win an historic first ever All-Ireland Junior Cup on Saturday, their scrum-half, Matty Dane, knows they will need to dictate the play against Clogher.

He has seen it in games where the Skins have controlled matters and went on to victory.

Dictating the play and tempo of a rugby match can very much depend on the No. 9, and while Dane knows this is pressure on him, he does not seem too bothered: “Pressure’s for tyres. If we can maintain the speed we play at that we have shown over the last couple of weeks, we can kind of dictate the pace of the game, and generally we get the scores and come out on top.”

While Dane is calm in demeanour, he knows how important this final is to the club but also to rugby in general in the area.

“This is the first time in the history of the club we will be in this final, so the boys are definitely pushing hard.

“You can big-up the rivalry all you want, but it’s not often you get two teams from west of the Bann that get into a final.

“It’s great advertisement for rugby this side of the Bann.”

Both teams have won trophies in recent years; however, Clogher are reigning champions of this competition.

Dane accepts Skins will be seen as underdogs on Saturday but with it being their closest rivals in cup rugby, it will not play too much on the players’ minds.

“Obviously we are going in as underdogs, but certainly we won’t let that play too much on us,” said the 23-year-old who added there will be little motivation needed for the final.

“You play them twice in a year and anything more than that is something to look forward to. If you are not going to get up for a local rivalry, what are you going to get up for?

“It’s knock-out rugby, final stages.

“It’s who makes the least mistakes on the day that wins. At the end of the day, they will be feeling the pressure as much as us.”

The sides were meant to play each other last Saturday in the league but a frozen pitch put that on ice.

While Dane was disappointed not to get that run-out and have a look at Clogher he knows the extra week of preparation will also be of benefit.

And that preparation is going well, according to Dane, who believes the battle of the packs will settle this derby final.

“As my dad says, the game’s won in the forwards and the backs decide by how much.

“It’s up front the game is won, so the forwards will have a hard time but I’m sure they are more than fit for them.

“A few of us know exactly how Clogher play, and they know exactly how we play, so it will be an interesting day.

“But the boys are training hard; everyone is looking forward to it, and mad to get going.”
