Enniskillen Royal Boat Club rower Acorn Cassidy won a superb silver medal in the World Indoor Rowing Championships on Saturday.

This was a hybrid event, in person in Toronto, Canada, and also virtually from your own home from where Acorn produced a tremendous performance in the U17 500m event.

To qualify to race virtually, Acorn had to submit a qualification race and be in the top three in their continent (each event has a max of 15 virtual places - three per continent) so even qualifying to race was a big achievement.

Acorn finished second in the world with a 500m time of 1 minute 34.5 seconds! The girl who won (Annelise Hahl) also competed virtually, from USA, and she set a new world record of 1 minute 29.6 seconds thereby putting into perspective the significance of Acorn’s performance.

Acorn was suitably delighted and will compete in this weekend’s Erne Head for ERBC. The silver medallist was keen to extend gratitude to the ERBC coaches and team-mates as well as Mount Lourdes for their support.
