Three outstanding young people have recently been awarded grants by the Fermanagh Recreational Trust to help support them in fulfilling their Olympic dreams.
Rowers Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney are training full time in Cork with the national team. Ross has been selected to race for the 2023 season, and aims to get placed within the top seven at the World Championship and qualify for the Olympics. Nathan is putting Queens University on hold to move full time training to Cork and maximise progress towards the goal of Paris 2024 Olympics. They will use their grants towards travel and training costs.
Wrestler Darragh Love is in the Under 23 category and aiming to compete for Great Britain at the 2028 Olympic Games. Darragh must travel monthly to Manchester and other training sessions in Coleraine, Carrickfergus and Dublin, plus fees for competitions and specialist kit.
James Cooper, trustee of the Fermanagh Recreational Trust said: “We are delighted to be in a position to support our high achieving local sports stars Ross, Nathan and Darragh with these practical grant awards towards travel and equipment costs, helping towards their Olympic dreams.
Four local organisations have also been supported with grants to assist in the purchase of new equipment and launch exciting new programmes.
From their recent funding round, Fermanagh Recreational Trust is helping Enniskillen Running Club purchase new equipment for their Junior members. Other organisations supported include County Fermanagh Supercup NI, to help 36 13-16 year olds receive an opportunity to engage in high-quality footballing activities in Supercup NI this summer.
"It’s also great to see these local organisations continue to develop their innovative programmes, increasing levels of participation by young people and the wider community. Congratulations and we wish all of them every success," said Mr. Cooper.
The Fermanagh Recreational Trust, administered by grant making charity the Fermanagh Trust, supports the organisation, development and funding of sporting/arts-based activities and facilities in Co. Fermanagh with particular emphasis on young people and youth development. Constituted Sporting and/or arts-based organisations or individuals based in County Fermanagh may apply.
