Derrygonnelly 1-16 Kinawley 0-10

A STRONG second quarter surge from Derrygonnelly saw them run in comfortable winners over Kinawley and move out in front in Division One.

The Harps backed up a trouncing of Derrylin last Thursday, 4-15 to 1-06, with a professional performance against the Borus.

For Kinawley, they could not follow up their 2-11 to 2-04 win against Belcoo as they struggled to contain an impressive Derrygonnelly side.

Pleased with the win

Derrygonnelly joint manager Sean Flanagan was pleased with the win and, in general, the start they have made to the league but is aware they have tough games yet to come.

“We’re happy with the win and our overall start to the league.

“I thought there were a number of good aspects to our play. We will watch the video and see what went well for us and what didn’t and use this break coming up to work on both as we have two difficult games coming up,” he commented.

Traded scores

It was to be an evenly matched opening 15 minutes as the sides traded scores.

Tiarnan McKenna (2) and Caolan Brennan were on target for Kinawley while Garvan Jones (2) and Ronan McGovern pointed for the home side.

But it would be all Derrygonnelly for the remainder of the half.

The Harps would plunder the only goal of the game as some good interplay up the pitch saw Shane McGullion play in Oisin Smyth and the full back made no mistake, 1-03 to 0-03.

Conor McGovern would increase the Derrygonnelly lead and this was followed by a Gary McKenna score after good work by Daniel Ward.

Garvan Jones then converted two more frees just before the break to leave it 1-07 to 0-03 at half time.

Kinawley had the first score of the second half through an Eoghan McManus mark but Rian McGovern cancelled this out before Garvan Jones added another free following a foul on Declan Cassidy.

Two further Garvan Jones frees either side of a McKenna placed ball for Kinawley made it 1-11 to 0-05.

Liam Owens would fire over Kinawley’s first score from play of the second half as he found space following strong running from Paddy McGovern.

Derrygonnelly’s McKenna would hit the next score as he bundled through Kinawley challenges before somehow managing to hook the ball over the bar.

Garvan Jones would then convert another free which was followed up by an Aaron Jones point to extend the Derrygonnelly lead to 11 points, 1-14 to 0-06.

Donal Owens then curled over a score for the Borus before the Harps had another sight of goal as Garvan Jones drove at the heart of the Kinawley defence, but with two men in support he opted to shoot and drove the ball over the bar.

A Sean McManus mark and Brennan score from play reduced the deficit to 10 points before Conall Jones, who was introduced as a half-time substitute, collected a ball from his brother, Garvan, to fire over with his left foot .

It was Kinawley who would hit the final point of the game through a McManus mark but it was only a consolation score as it finished 1-16 to 0-10 to Derrygonnelly.
