Belnaleck 0-09 Ederney 1-13

Ederney continued their recent run of good form as they backed up last Friday night’s win over Erne Gaels by picking up the two points against Belnaleck on Tuesday night.

Following a tight opening period, Ederney finished the first half strongly to lead by five at the break and then when it appeared as if the Art McMurroughs were building a head of steam in the second half Conor McGee swooped for the only goal of the game to put Ederney back in charge and they were able to see the game out from there to seal the win.

Ederney manager Chris Kelly was pleased with the wins over Erne Gaels and Belnaleck over recent days.

“It was two good wins for us and is a sign that we are hopefully moving in the right direction. That’s us unbeaten now in five games and it is about trying to get a level of consistency.

“The biggest thing from Tuesday night was that it was the strongest squad we have had this year to date with still a few more to come back so it augers well for us,” he commented.

There was little between the sides over the opening 20 minutes of the contest. Paul McCusker landed the first score of the game for Ederney before Garvan Quigley levelled things from a free.

Ederney had chances to add to their tally but kicked three successive wides before Sean Cassidy did land their second of the contest.

It was nip and tuck after this as Sean Lewsley and Quigley (2) tagged on points for the Art McMurroughs while Cassidy (2) and Snow converted frees for Ederney who led 0-05 to 0-04.

However, it was in the ten minute spell before half time that Ederney began to take a degree of control on the contest, rattling off four unanswered points before the break.

McGee knocked over two points while Cassidy was also among the scores as Ederney pushed into a 0-09 to 0-04 half time lead.

Belnaleck started the second half well with a Quigley free from distance but the sides were to trade scores after this Quigley on target for Belnaleck and Cassidy replying for Ederney who led 0-11 to 0-06.

However, the home side then hit two points in a row as Quigley tagged on another point from a free and Che Cullen fired over from long range to cut the gap back to three.

Just though when it seemed that Belnaleck were gaining the upperhand, Ederney struck for a goal, a quick counter attack resulting in McGee tucking to the net to put six between the sides.

Quigley did knock over another free for the home side but it was Ederney who finished the stronger as Niall Maguire and McGee lobbed over points to leave it 1-13 to 0-09 at the final whistle.
