Derrygonnelly attacker Gary McKenna acknowledges that there will be no great surprises for either team on Saturday when the Harps take on Kinawley for a spot in this year SFC Final.

The sides met in the Division One final prior to the start of the championship, a game that Derrygonnelly won after extra time and McKenna is expecting another battle against the Borus.

“We know each other inside out at this stage,” said McKenna.

“We have played a couple of times this year with the league final being the latest and it was a tight game that went the whole way to extra time and we know it is probably going to be something similar this weekend. We know what Kinawley will bring, they are a great side but I think this week we will just focus on ourselves and hopefully, we can pull out a good enough performance.”

Derrygonnelly claimed top spot in their group to seal that automatic place in the semi-final but McKenna stresses that will mean nothing if they don’t go on and make the final.

“We won all our games in the group stages which is pleasing but we’ve won nothing yet. Everybody is in the same position here, there are four teams in the semi finals and they will all want to get through to the final and that’s our goal.

“That is all semi-finals are, it is just about getting through to the final but we know it is going to be a tough game as always against Kinawley,” he said.

While Kinawley had a gruelling extra time encounter against Belnaleck last week, Derrygonnelly had an extra week’s rest as they progressed straight through to the semi-finals after winning their group but McKenna feels that could work either way.

“It is hard to know whether it is good or bad as there is pros and cons to both. You maybe have that extra week but it could be too long sitting out.

“It’s just hard to know but that’s the cards we’ve been dealt and we have gone with it and we’re looking forward to this weekend,” he commented.

McKenna missed out on the championship last year having taken the decision to go travelling in Australia but he admits that he missed the buzz of the championship and is looking forward to Saturday.

“We did loads of travelling and I was glad I went but when it comes to this time of year you miss being at home and that buzz that there is so I was glad to be back and looking forward to these big games,” he added.
