Fermanagh hurler, Ryan Bogue (right), believes ‘common sense’ has prevailed following the announcement that controversial hurling plans have been withdrawn.

The proposals, if passed would have seen five counties, including Fermanagh, withdrawn from the Allianz Hurling League and only be able to play in the Lory Meagher Cup from 2025.

However, before the proposal could be put to Congress, the Central Competitions Control Committee met last weekend to put the plans on hold.

“Thankfully it worked out in the end,” said Bogue.

“We had to make as much noise about it as possible and we got the backing of everyone else. That was the main thing. Thankfully it didn’t even get to a vote.

“That was the best outcome we could have hoped for.”

A hurling taskforce has been set up but the National Hurling Action Plan Workgroup, as it has been named, could consider the proposal in their remit.

Bogue believes this workgroup is a better idea than the original proposal: “That’s what’s needed. They need to get a proper look into things instead of doing away with county teams’ [participation].

“That’s the worst thing they could have done,” added Bogue who would like to see more done with football clubs to try and drive interest and participation in hurling.
