South West College (SWC) have qualified for the semi-final of the Electric Ireland Corn na Mac Leinn HE championship following a hard fought win over the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) GAA on Monday night.

The students led by four points at half-time courtesy of a Cal McAnespy goal and they were able to to hold on to book their place in the last four in Tralee tomorrow (Friday).

It was RCSI who opened the scoring with two points before Tiarnan McKenna got SWC on the scoreboard in the fifth minute.

Five minutes later SWC were in front thanks to McAnespy's goal and while RCSI would respond with another point, three points on the trot from McKenna, Ultan O'Reilly and Ben Thompson made it 1-04 to 0-03 by the 21st minute.

RCSI did grab another point to close the gap but a free from Cian O'Brien left it 1-05 to 0-04 in favour of SWC at the break.

In six second half minutes, RCSI went from being four points down to a point up as they hit 1-02 without reply before an O'Reilly point settled SWC and levelled the game.

The sides then traded scores with O'Brien scoring from a free and a play with the sides all level with less than 10 minutes to play.

But SWC finished strong with Thompson finding the net while Aaron Lee and Lawrence McKeown hit late scores to leave it 2-10 to 1-08 at the final whistle.

SWC coach, Dermott Feely said: "The win was a hard fought battle against a very good RCSI team. The lads went in 1-05 to 0-04 at half time after controlling most of the first half.

"The second half RCSI started the better team but the power and pace of the SWC lads told in the end. They Battled hard and worked hard for each other to see us over the line."

They now face New York at 2pm in Tralee on Friday a rematch of last year's semi-final and Feely said the squad were looking forward to it

"We are really looking forward to the weekend in Tralee and a rematch with New York, a repeat of last year's semi in which we narrowly missed out on the final.

"The lads are really looking forward to the experience and hopefully they will produce a performance to make it through to the final on Saturday."
