Fr. Brian D'Arcy is described as being in "a more contemplative mood" in "And Catch the Heart off Guard," his newly released title.

For the well-known Rector of St. Gabriel's Retreat, The Graan Monastery, a respected journalist, author and broadcaster, it is his 15th book.

He admits it's the book he didn't want to write. Columba Press was eager to publish a book of his sermons. He, however, was convinced that sermons pass their sell-by date as soon as they're preached. It was only when the highly respected writer and theologian, Angela Hanley, took on the task of gathering inspirational passages from his sermons that he agreed.

"There is a real need for accessible reflections which help us to pray gently," says Brian, who is pictured on the book's front cover beside his favourite tree near The Graan Monastery.

The title is taken from Seamus Heaney's masterpiece "Postscript," which encourages people "to make time to take time" to let the wonder be.

"As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways, And catch the heart off guard and blow it open." (Postscript by Seamus Heaney.)

Brian discovered that "it is only when the heart is broken open that we can know the need for healing. That's prayer at its best!"

The book is 'a collection of thoughts - inspirational, humorous, challenging - ready-made for the busy person aching for a quick injection of hope."

Just past his 70th birthday, Brian D'Arcy "is in a more contemplative mood in this, his latest book," says Columba Press, which notes: "Fr D'Arcy reaches out to people to share something of his deep faith and his conviction of the boundless love of God."
