FERMANAGH-SOUTH Tyrone MLA Arlene Foster has paid tribute to outgoing first minister and DUP leader Peter Robinson.

Speaking at the party’s annual conference, Mrs. Foster, who is tipped to replace Mr. Robinson as first minister, said it was “an honour to serve him.”

“Peter’s dedication to Northern Ireland and to this party cannot be overstated and I know I speak for many when I say we owe you a debt of gratitude for your selfless years of service,” she said.

Mr. Robinson, who has been in front-line politics, gave his final conference speech as leader.

“My race is nearly run; advancing years and failing health bring with them a sense of mortality and counsel me that in time – though I hope not too soon - I must pass beyond the reach of earthly powers.

“I am filled with overwhelming gratitude for the constant and unwavering loyalty, support and kindness I have received from friends and colleagues throughout the party.

Expressly I have cherished the friendship and companionship of my senior colleagues who have stood by me – with equal vigor - in the deep valleys as on the mountaintops.

“I bid each of you a fond and affectionate farewell,” he said.
