One of the most senior citizens in Kesh has been seriously injured after being knocked down last Thursday evening.
Harry Woods, 93, is being treated in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast this week having suffered a broken pelvis, a hairline fracture in two of the vertebrae in his neck and injuries to his face and nose. It is understood that the collision involved a 4x4 vehicle.
Mr. Woods lives in Glendurragh Park and was crossing the Crevenish Road to his car which was parked in the lay-by opposite his house when the incident occurred.
His son Neville Woods explained that Mr. Woods had intended to visit his cousin that evening and had his dog with him at the time. Mr. Woods was struck on his left side and fell on his face. The dog was also injured and subsequently had to be put down.
Neville and his brother Nigel hope their father can receive a hip replacement in a bid to repair the damage to his pelvic area. However, the elderly man contracted pneumonia on Saturday therefore a replacement operation will have to wait.
“He is very ill,” Neville told The Impartial Reporter. “He was transferred from the South West Acute Hospital at 2.30am on Friday and arrived at the Royal around 4am. Unfortunately he got pneumonia on Saturday. On Monday he had to have a blood transfusion.” Neville said that he is constantly worried about his elderly father encountering cars travelling up and down the Crevenish Road. “This was an accident that was waiting to happen."
He stated: “It’s a dread on us because we live 11 miles away.”
“I know that road, it’s on a slight bend. I have campaigned for speed ramps to be installed near Glendurragh Park but it was unsuccessful. I can’t understand why. I live in Ballinamallard where a number of speed ramps were recently installed on the entrances to the village. Why can’t Roads Service do the same in Kesh? I know there are some near the primary school but that’s 300 yards on up the road.
“There’s other old people next door to my father and across the way. He has been parking in the lay-by across from his house for a long time.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them. Constable Mary McLoughlin said: “An elderly man was knocked down and sustained serious injuries on 18 February, and police are seeking witnesses. It is understood he was crossing the Crevenish Road in Kesh at around 7.10pm, at the time. Did you see anything?
