A Newtownbutler man has spoken of his shock after watching a lorry trailer burst into flames on Monday night.
The trailer belonging to the lorry, owned by Liam Connolly (Roadfreight) Limited, was destroyed in the fire which is being treated as accidental.
An eye-witness, who spotted the smoke rising from the lorry, said it was “amazing how quickly the fire took off.”
“I came across it as it was starting to smoke and by the time the fire brigade had arrived it had really taken off. The whole wires, the phones lines, were totally burnt and the phone lines were down. Another lorry was moved away. The firefighters were afraid of maybe the flames shooting up the road,” he said.
Two fire appliances from nearby Lisnaskea spent almost four hours tackling the blaze.
“By luck it wasn’t near any private homes. You can just imagine how it would have been if it had taken off in the main street and the damage to the buildings that it would have caused. It was lucky that it happened in the countryside, just a mile or so out of the town,” he said.
According to the eye-witness had it not been for the quick action of the lorry driver it could have been worse.
“He unhooked the lorry off the container and got it away from the fire. He didn’t lose a lorry, just the trailer. I am sure he was shaken up by it.”
“The idea of the wires snapping and flying up the road, flames and all, hit me five minutes into it. Once I knew the lorry man was safe, I was fine. At least there was no loss of life,” he said.
A spokesman for Liam Connolly (Roadfreight) Limited said: “This was an unfortunate incident with the cause as yet unknown. Thankfully no one was injured. We would like to thank the police, fire crews and all the other agencies who assisted at the scene.”
