PIPE Major David Johnston, originally from Fermanagh, was the musical director for the Celtic Massed Pipes and Drums who performed at the Spasskaya Tower Music Festival in Red Square, Moscow.

Mr Johnston was joined in the band by Ray Hall, Adam Fawcett and Nathan Fawcett, who are all also from Fermanagh.

Other band members came from countries across Europe including the UK, Ireland, Germany, Holland and Belgium.

The 10-day Russian festival had over 1,500 performers and plays to sell-out crowds of over 10,000 people each night.

The event was also broadcast live across Russia.

The band’s performance included playing for the International Scottish Highland Dance Team who put on a colourful display of Scottish Highland Dancing.

The Massed Pipes and Drums concluded their performance each night by joining the Central Military Band of Russia to perform ‘Amazing Grace’.

The pipe band also took part in multiple charity events and high profile parades in Moscow, including a trip to the Grand Kremlin Palace.

Mr Johnston said: “To play as a part of this band was a dream come true for all of its members. Whenever I first learned to play the bagpipes as a child, I never thought that this instrument would ever take me places as unique as Moscow.”

He added: “I would encourage young people to learn a pipe band instrument.”
