A trial 24 hour opening of Eden Street’s public conveniences during weekends has been suspended by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council due to vandalism.
The temporary measure first commenced at the facility in Enniskillen on October 14 following an increase in weekend revellers answering nature’s call in public.
But at Tuesday night’s Council meeting it emerged that the trial has now been stopped because of vandals.
“There is a problem with urination on the street,” stated Ulster Unionist Councillor Alex Baird who said vandalising public conveniences “goes beyond belief”. How people do that I do not know,” he said, adding that it will now be up to the ratepayers of Fermanagh and Omagh to pay the repair bill “yet again.”
Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas O’Reilly said it is the “civic responsibility” for everybody to respect public amenities while the Democratic Unionist’s Keith Elliott spoke of his disappointment and complained that the Christmas tree outside Enniskillen Townhall had also been vandalised.
Police say numerous decorations were broken, lights were torn down and branches on the tree were broken off in the early hours of Monday morning. One of the light displays was also damaged and the parts were located in Eden Street car park. “I don’t know what people get out of destroying other people’s property,” Councillor Elliott told the Council.
