A priest has apologised for his “wrong” and “insensitive” remarks made from the altar two weeks ago, which resulted in a number of parishioners walking out of the service.

Fr. John Halton, parish priest in Tempo, admitted that the comments he made from the altar on Sunday, February 5 “made people feel uncomfortable, ill at ease and unduly upset.”

He apologised to his congregation the following Sunday and his apology was written in this week’s mass bulletin.

It read:
“In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks us to be reconciled with our neighbour … I wish to say sorry for comments I made here on Sunday the 5th of February.

“I should not have made them during a homily or during Mass. I know that during my homily I made some people feel uncomfortable, ill at ease, unduly upset and less than welcome.

“Obviously I was wrong and insensitive to the feelings of others. I wish to apologise unreservedly for any hurt caused, and hope not to cause ill feeling at Mass in the future.

“In asking for your forgiveness I hope with God’s help to do my best in the future. I ask your forgiveness and God’s forgiveness for my insensitivity.”

He concluded; “Mass is a celebration during which we should feel welcome and close to God. Always feel welcome and if you feel unwelcome, do let me know.”

Clogher Diocese Administrator, Monsignor Joseph McGuinness told The Impartial Reporter:
“I understand that Fr. Halton has spoken to the people of his parish and has made a full and generous apology. I hope that this will conclude this matter in a spirit of reconciliation.”
