When Mrs. Sheila Carson, a popular member of the teaching profession in Fermanagh, stepped down from her teaching duties around two decades ago, she certainly didn’t lose her special touch, if the pupils of Brookeborough Primary School are anything to go by.

In fact, the Brookeborough woman, who served as Vice Principal of Brookeborough Primary School until taking retirement, has been visiting the school weekly for the last 20 years to help with reading.

She comes in on Thursdays and spends most of the morning at the school, from 9.30am to 12 noon.

“The children and staff look forward to her visits,” explained School Principal Miss Hazel Gardiner.

She mentioned that Mrs. Carson mainly works with P3/4 pupils in the school, and they enjoy their time spent with Sheila.

“The children just love to go out to her,” acknowledged Miss Gardiner, who mentioned that Mrs. Carson says that it does as much good for her as it does for the children.

Miss Gardiner says they are absolutely delighted that the former Vice Principal comes in and she describes it as a great support in the class.

In addition to helping the seven and eight year old pupils with their reading, she also does reading games with them.

To mark her 80th birthday on May 11, the children gave Mrs. Carson flowers, a gift and a birthday cake and they sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her.
