There was a huge entry of 2000 sheep at Enniskillen’s annual autumn show and sale of breeding ewes and sale of rams all breeds on Monday, August 31. The quality of ewes and ewe lambs were mostly of a high standard and trade was considered satisfactory in the present state of the sheep industry with almost a complete clearance.

Judging the ewes was William Glazebrook from Scotland. who awarded first prize to the pen of Suffolk cross ewes, the property of Desmond Knox Ederney as the champion pen and winner of the S. R. Martin Cup.

Mr. Knox had three pens of Suffolk cross ewes and these sold for £190, £170 and £165, the top price of the sale.

Second prize in the class was won by R Sproule, Leamore and sold for £144.

Patrick Gallen, Castlederg, won first and second prize for his outstanding quality Suffolk cross ewe lambs and received £130 and £110 for his top two pens.

R. Mcclelland, Kesh, was awarded first and third prizes for Greyface ewes which sold for £136 and £118, second prize to Paul Leonard, Aghalane selling for £122.

First prize for Continental cross ewes went to A. Noble, Kesh selling for £140 second and third prize went to Paul Leonard selling for £122 and £120.

The Continental cross ewe lamb class was won by James Henderson, Trillick and sold for £81. Second in this class went to Mrs R Moore, Kesh , selling for £70 and third to Mr. Morris Breen Tempo for £76.

In the rams section, 105 rams were sold with a top price of 720gns for a Blue Texel shearling. The owner, Gordon Buchanan, Lisbellaw, sold five other Blue Texel shearlings for 550gns, 530gns, 510gns, 430gns and 250gns.

Seamus McGuinness, Letterbreen sold two straight cross Texel/Charollais for 475gns and 470gns and other Texels for 450gns, 340gns twice 330gns, 300gns and250gns.

Charles Seaman, Florencecourt, received 350gns for a Texel shearling, also 270gns, 240gns and 220gns for ram lambs.

Charollais rams sold to 450gns paid to D and S. McCawley, Downpatrick and 330gns and 280gns to J. Kempson, Killen. 330gns for a three-shear ram went to D. Johnston, Enniskillen and 330gns and 300gns to J. Wilson, Florencecourt for shearlings.
