Adams: G8 will advertise county

SINN Fein President Gerry Adams has said the G8 summit in Fermanagh is an opportunity to advertise the county and surrounding area.

But he admitted "there is almost a contradiction" by praising the event, given how critical his Fermanagh party colleagues, Phil Flanagan and Barry Doherty, have been of the event in the past.

Mr Adams told The Impartial Reporter: "I would have regularly taken issue of these big superpowers and their failure to deal with third world debt and exploitation, particularly of the developing world and so on.""At the same time, you are going to have the international media here. Fermanagh is going to be showcased, the surrounding district, into Donegal and Cavan is going to be booked out by international press. Obviously we have to make our political point, but we would be very negligent if we didn't try to persuade as much of the world press to advertise what's best about this place."

Mr Adams said the peace process "which is functioning for all its imperfections" is something "we need to be telling all the big leaders."

"I have raised this with the Taoiseach and it would be remiss of him at a time when there is awfulness in the Middle East and here are these leaders who have not moved on this issue in Ireland where there is a peace process," he said.
