A much loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Stella Martha Hetherington, late of Cloughcor Road, Lisbellaw, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2106, at South West Acute Hospital. Aged 89 years, Stella would have celebrated her 90th birthday less than a week later, having been born on January 10, 1926.
She enjoyed good health, prior to her short illness. Formerly Noble, she was a daughter of Richard and Agnes Noble, of Lisboy, Fivemiletown. She was educated at Coolrakelly School, near Creagh Cross, and continued her education at the Collegiate School.
She met and married on April 26, 1949, Mr. William Edwin Hetherington, best known as Edwin. He had returned from the R.A.F., following the Second World War.
The couple made their home in the Lisbellaw area, moving to Cloughcor Crescent, and then they built a bungalow in 1967 at Cloughcor Road, which continued to be the family home.
The couple raised a family of four sons and one daughter: David; Maurice; the late Eric; Roy and Susan.
Stella focused on her home and family, and she was a supportive wife to Edwin, who had been a familiar face in the county, serving as an Ulster Unionist Councillor on Fermanagh District Council. Stella would have helped out at Ulster Unionist events.
She enjoyed pursuing a number of interests and was an active member of the Mothers’ Union, having enjoyed being a member for over 60 years, and for the same period she was an active member of the Women’s Institute. She played an active role in Lisbellaw Parish Church of Ireland, where she was a long time parishioner, and sang in the church choir. In her younger days, she was raised in Creagh Methodist Church and went to Sunday School there.
She was passionate about gardening and held a great knowledge. She kept a beautiful colourful, perfumed garden at her house, which she and Edwin enjoyed caring for over the years and they perfected the rosebed together. Following Edwin’s passing, Stella continued to maintain their garden, which she delighted in showing people around. She was a keen cook, and was well known for her home-made jams and soups.
She loved people coming to visit and she really looked forward to visits by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family get-togethers were a source of much pleasure to Stella. Another passion had been her love of Irish Red Setter dogs.
Stella’s funeral service took place at Lisbellaw Parish Church, conducted by Canon David Skuce. The hymns were The Old Rugged Cross, How Great Thou Art, and Nearer My God To Thee. Burial was at Tattygar Cemetery.
Predeceased by her husband, Edwin, on April 10, 2013, Stella is survived by her sons, David and wife Ida; Maurice and wife Heather; Roy and wife Carol; and by her daughter Susan. (She was predeceased by her son Eric in 1979.) She had been devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and is survived by her grandsons: Mark; Barry; the late Rowan; Scott and Christian, and by her great grandchildren: Bethany, Jack and Ben Hetherington. Stella leaves her sister, Joan McMichael, Newtownabbey, having been predeceased by her brothers, Cecil (who had also been a well known Fermanagh District Councillor) and Richard Noble. The funeral arrangements were by Gordon Elliott, S.R. Elliott and Sons, Enniskillen.  Donations in lieu are to The Chest, Heart and Stroke Association and Parkinson’s Support  c/o Gordon Elliott, S.R. Elliott’s.
