Accused of stealing jewellery from his own grandmother

A 25-YEAR-OLD man who is accused of stealing jewellery from his own grandmother has been remanded in custody to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court via video link next month.
The court heard on Monday how the grandmother of Mark McKeown, no fixed abode, Enniskillen, was "by her own admission, petrified of him".
Over the course of last week as he celebrated his 25th birthday he came to the attention of police on several occasions, clocking up charges including burglary, two counts of theft, attempted theft from a vehicle, disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage and interference with vehicles.
Opposing bail for the defendant on Monday a police officer outlined how he had allegedly stolen a £500 iphone from his aunt on July 11.
The officer described how he also broke into his grandmother's house between July 8 and July 12 and stole a substantial amount of jewellery which he sold at a party later and attempted to break a door and window of a vehicle belonging to Star Taxis on July 13.
"Throughout the week the defendant was involved in a catalogue of offences," said the police officer, "His grandmother, by her own admission, is petrified of him due to his drug and alcohol abuse."
Mr McKeown also faces charges of disorderly behaviour at Castle Street, Enniskillen on July 13, as well as attempting to steal a car radio to the value of £50 from Star Taxis and interferring with a motor vehicle.
His defence solicitor proposed that a bail address in Irvinestown would be suitable, submitting that he had co-operated with police since his arrest on Saturday.
She added that her client strenuously denied all charges against him.
But the police officer told the court that Mr McKeown was already on bail on other matters at the time that he was arrested.
District Judge Liam McNally told Mr McKeown that due to the record of evidence against him, the presumption in favour of bail was denied.
He was remanded in custody to appear via video link at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on August 13.
