MEMBERS of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have questioned whether or not ‘appropriate procedures had been adhered to’ during the granting of a petroleum licence to a fracking company by the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment.
During a recent Council meeting, the issue of Tamboran Resources’ test drill site in Belcoo was raised, with some councillors discussing the impact of the project in Belcoo and Letterbreen.
Councillors acknowledged the concerns being conveyed by the local community, particularly in the Erne West area of Fermanagh with some saying there had been a lack of consultation.
A motion by Sinn Fein was proposed by John Feely and seconded by Frankie Donnelly and called on Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to lend its support to the local community.
Councillor Feely outlined his motion to the Chamber: “That this Council is totally opposed to shale gas exploration and extraction by the process of hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as ‘fracking’.
The motion was passed.
