‘Turn on the big light’ Meaning: This is not about a gigantic light, such as a spotlight or a standard lamp. This refers to the turning on of a ceiling light, an instruction usually barked to a child by a mother or father. Or by Bob when Charlie visits for a pot of tea.
Example: Bob to Charlie: “That teabag is wet now, let her sit there another while”.
Charlie to Bob: “The oul evenings are fairly drawing in now, aren’t they?” Bob to Charlie: “They are surely, Charlie. Turn on the big light till we see what we’re doin’”.
