25 YEARS AGO - July 26, 1990: Fermanagh’s lakeland is one of the highlights of ‘Wish You Were Here’ - Holiday programme presenter Judith Chalmers said her visit to County Fermanagh, last week, must be one of the highlights of the 17 years she has been doing “Wish You Were Here.” The popular personality, with her crew of six members, accompanied by Philippa Reid, public relations manager for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, were spending almost a week filming in the county. Philippa said they had all really enjoyed themselves, and it appeared they did not want to go home. All roads led to The Linnet Inn at Boho on Friday night, when “word got around” that Judith Chalmers was calling in. The 200-year-old bar had been chosen as one of the filming locations.

Scouts head off on an overland trip - A party of Scouts from several troops in Fermanagh began an overland journey to Austria this week to attend a major jamboree. The Scouts, from Rossorry, Inniskilling and Ballinamallard troops, will be among the 150 Scouts from Northern Ireland attending Vienna ‘90, an international Scout camp. They will be wearing their dress uniform of saffron kilts, traditionally worn by Scouts when travelling abroad.

Clogher Valley Show basks in sunshine - The cream of Ulster livestock paraded in warm sunshine at Clogher Valley Show yesterday (Wednesday). The 73rd annual show held by the Clogher Valley Agricultural Society was assured of good weather as the heatwave continued this week. Exhibitors from throughout Northern Ireland and some from the Republic travelled to the popular venue at Omagh Road, Augher, to compete for a slice of the £5,000 prizemoney on offer. The show secretary, Mrs. Bertha Willis was delighted with the weather, the large numbers of spectators and the large number of entries in each of the sections from cattle and sheep to home baking and gardening. This year a number of important qualifiers were held, not only in the horse section but in the home produce classes.

Caves celebrate birthday with special visitor - The Marble Arch Caves celebrated the 250,000th visitor to the centre last week on the 95th anniversary of the first exploration of the caves. The Magill family from Ballymena bought the ticket which brought the total number of visitors to the quarter million mark, and in acknowledgement they were presented with a Belleek China vase by cave warden, Mr. Richard Watson. 50 YEARS AGO - July 22, 1965: Personal - Mr. J.M. Bliss, secretary of the London branch of the Old Portora Union, was a guest at the Enniskillen Rotary Club’s luncheon on Monday. His father, Colonel J. Bliss, was the first manager of the Taylor-Woods factory in Enniskillen in 1947-1948. He has been staying with the Fawcetts at Belcoo.

Our Man off to Aden - MAP - What to wear in the torrid mid-summer heat of Arabia? That’s what is worrying one of our staff, Mervyn Dane, who sets off this week-end on a 4,000 mile flight to Bahrain, on the Persian Gulf, and Aden, to spend eight days with the Inniskilling Dragoons stationed there. The visit has been specially arranged for the “Impartial Reporter” by the War Office, and Mr. Dane will be their guest for the week. I understand the temperature in Aden is at least 100 degrees in the shade just now. He is eagerly looking forward to this, his first trip outside the United Kingdom.

Enniskillen to Belfast - 90-mile Trek by Portorans - Eight Portora boys walked the 89 miles from Enniskillen to Belfast at the week-end to raise money for Oxfam. They left on Friday when the school broke up for the summer holidays and completed their journey on Monday. The boys - four from Ulster, one from Dublin, one from Scotland, one from Clones, and another from Singapore - travelled via Armagh and Portadown. They were entertained to tea on Saturday by members of Armagh Urban Council, and the following evening dined with the Deputy Mayor of Portadown and other councillors. Ballinamallard Winner - In this year’s National Travel Scholarship competition organised by the Brooke Bond Tea Company, first prize in County Fermanagh in the senior art section was awarded to Cecil Stevenson, of Ballinamallard Secondary School. He receives £8 in National Savings Certificates.

Fermanagh in Portrush - Sunburned and full of enthusiasm for more work, one of my colleagues has returned from a week in Portrush where he was treated royally by Fermanagh folk. His hosts were Christy Johnston, of Kesh, and his wife, Maud, who originally came from Belault, near Pettigo. 50 YEARS AGO - July 25, 1940: The Premier Visits Enniskillen - Lord Craigavon, accompanied by Sir Dawson Bates, Minister of Home Affairs; Major J.C. M’Dermott, Minister of Public Security, with Sir Basil Brooke, Bart, M.C. and the Inspector General Lieut.-Colonel Sir Charles Wickham, visited Enniskillen on Friday to confer with local leaders on matters of defence and the security of the district. The Prime Minister gave a private luncheon which was attended by police officers, and leading public men in the county. Conferences were later heard, when the views of the different defence services were noted. Among those present were Mr. J.E.F. Collum, H.M.L.; Hon. Cecil Lowry-Corry, vice Chairman of Fermanagh County Council; Mr. G. Whaley, J.P., chairman of Enniskillen Urban District Council. Hon. Sir E.M. Archdale, the Bishop of Clogher, Very Rev. H. MacManaway. New Stationmaster at Maguiresbridge - Mr. Frank Tutty, who had been parcel clerk at Lurgan, has been promoted stationmaster at Maguiresbridge on the G.N.R. line.

‘Missing,’ now a prisoner - Sergt. Jim Elliott, of Newtownbutler, who had been reported missing, is now reported to be a prisoner of war.

The Magistracy - Mr. John Beatty, Edenmore House, Tempo, has been appointed to the Magistry for County Fermanagh. Mr. Beatty is a son of the late Mr. Joseph Beatty, formerly of Clones and later of Belmore Street, Enniskillen, and a brother of the late Dr. Guy Beatty and the late Mr. Montgomery Beatty, solicitor, of Enniskillen, both of whom served in the South African War. Mr. Beatty is a member of the Enniskillen Rural Council and is also a member of Enniskillen Board of Guardians.

Teaching Diploma - Miss Mona Maguire, Belmore St., Enniskillen, at the recent examinations of the London College of Music, was awarded the A.L.C.M. teaching diploma. Miss Maguire, who has also won several medals at Sligo, Omagh and Enniskillen Feiseanna, and who holds many certificates from the R.I.A.M., Dublin, received her tuition, from Miss Kathleen Wray, Enniskillen. In the playing of the two concerto tests for her degree, Miss Maguire lost only two marks.

Football - In a friendly match at Enniskillen on 17th inst., an Army XI defeated Enniskillen Summer League by seven goals to four.

Clogher Synod - The annual meeting of the Clogher Diocesan Synod will be held in Clones on Friday, 27th September next.
