DEAR MADAM, - It was with great interest that I read recent letters in your paper, some praising South West Acute Hospital (our local hospital), some ridiculing it. I don’t have a problem with this, everyone is entitled to their opinion. What does annoy me is all the letters claiming this one or that one is responsible for the hospital being there, sited where it is on the outskirts of Enniskillen.

I am just happy that we have such a service on our doorstep.

There is not ONE person that is responsible for the hospital being here - it is the people of Fermanagh who back as far as 1991/92 fought for what was rightfully theirs - the right to keep maternity services here in Fermanagh.

People rallied together, attended meetings in their community halls, called on their politicians to act and fought for what was rightfully theirs and for future generations.

Had this service been taken away, South West Acute Hospital would not have been built.

Through your paper I would appeal to the people of Fermanagh to do the same again, not only for our hospital services but for jobs for Fermanagh, services for Fermanagh. Fight to keep our young people here or at least to give them something to come back to.

Local politicians will be calling at our doors in the coming weeks looking for our vote. Ask them what they and their party are doing and how they intend to help the people of Fermanagh keep services and jobs in Fermanagh. No one person will do this but together we can achieve a lot.

Yours faithfully, UNA O’REILLY
