Dear Madam, - I wonder how many parents read or paid any heed to the brilliant letter on May 29, “Scourge is profiting from the young and vulnerable”. I want to reiterate every word in that letter. If you are a parent I would urge you to please look it up on the internet.

I have come to the opinion that gambling is probably the worst addition of all. It is hidden as it does not affect the body, only the mind. There is no social element any more, no need to go to the bookies, casino or bingo hall. You can take part secretly, anywhere on your iphone/ipad.

My son’s gambling probably started, before internet gambling, on the way to grammar school in Enniskillen. Apparently he played the “one armed bandits” in an arcade there and this escalated over the years to the internet and addiction. Unfortunately I can’t ask him now as he took his own life last year. He hid his gambling addiction and the pain it caused from everyone.

I congratulate the writer for being able to get help and turn his/her life around. I’m sure it was/will not be easy. Losing money is bad but the high risk of losing something more precious is much worse.

There is little awareness of gambling addiction in Fermanagh. Google “Help for gambling addiction in Fermanagh” and you will get an addiction website where there is no reference to gambling, only alcohol and drugs. Could whoever is responsible for this website please remedy this?

Perhaps the new Council should make some money available for an awareness campaign before it is too late. In my opinion this addiction will become more endemic and more people will lose their lives.

Yours faithfully, Name and address supplied
